Plot summary
Michael Danube works as a graphic designer in the city, where his pregnant wife Jennifer waits, but an email brings a video of his best friend Chris Daniels and a map, so he drives to a rural stretch of San Diego County. Chris has retreated to a cabin and greets him ranting and firing a pistol. When Chris refuses rehab, Michael stuns him, handcuffs him to an exposed pipe and imposes a week of cold turkey. Old acquaintances Micah and Billy arrive wanting the drugs Chris keeps; Chris warns that they have turned violent. Michael meets members of a UFO religion, finds strange photographs and disturbing film footage, and hears Chris deny sending any email or video. Charles, a tribal security guard, drives the pair off and then, after a bribe, allows them five days on reservation land.

- Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead added the addiction-recovery plotline purely to give their story structure, since they needed a device to spread events across seven days; the script took six months to write, and while the main story was shot in 17 days, the side plots were filmed over several months of weekends.
- Neither director had any real experience with drug detox, so they researched the topic on Google; co-director Justin Benson instead drew on the actual ramblings of a crack addict he knew personally to write the addicted character Chris's dialogue.
- Resolution seeded a shared cinematic universe: the later films Spring (2014), The Endless (2017) and Synchronic (2019) all take place in the same world and can be read as partial sequels to it.
