Isabel Jewell
Biography
Isabel Jewell was an American actress who worked in theater before films. Born in Shoshoni, Wyoming, in 1907, she spent years in stock companies, including an 87-week stay in Lincoln, Nebraska, and reached Broadway in Up Pops the Devil in 1930. Her film debut came with Blessed Event in 1932, and Warner Brothers brought her to Hollywood for the screen version of Up Pops the Devil. She often played gangsters' women, as in Manhattan Melodrama (1934) and Marked Woman (1937), and was well received playing against type in A Tale of Two Cities (1935). She appeared in Lost Horizon as Gloria, then in Gone with the Wind (1939), High Sierra (1941), and Val Lewton's The Leopard Man (1943) and The Seventh Victim (1943). Later roles grew smaller, though she was memorable in Born to Kill (1947). She also worked in radio and television, and her final film was Sweet Kill.
