Plot summary
Agnes White works at a lesbian bar and rents a room in a run-down Oklahoma motel. Nearly ten years after her young son Lloyd disappeared, she drinks and takes drugs with her friend R.C. and fields silent phone calls that she blames on Jerry Goss, her abusive ex-husband, newly paroled. One night R.C. brings over Peter Evans, a drifter who ends up sleeping on the couch. A faulty smoke alarm interrupts them. The next morning Jerry barges in, menaces Agnes and punches her before promising to return. Peter comforts her, then wakes her in the middle of the night with an aphid he says he has found in the bed, and tells her someone is after him.

- For the scenes where the motel room is covered floor to ceiling in tinfoil, director William Friedkin said the material was a nightmare to work with because it constantly needed repair and reflected the whole crew back into the shot.
