Plot summary

Margaret is an American living in Tokyo, where she spends her days teaching at a Japanese academy that prepares prospective flight attendants to understand English safety instructions. At night she drinks with two other expatriates, Ines and Liam, and looks for submissive encounters with strangers in the city's love hotels. She sometimes turns up at work dazed and disheveled, which worries her manager, Nakamura, who is sympathetic and sees a younger version of herself in Margaret. Then Margaret meets Kazu, a Yakuza enforcer, and the two start a relationship. Kazu tells her he is due to marry, which unsettles her, but he says the marriage is a matter of duty rather than love. She confides that she has no family left and chose Japan in order to be alone.
