Takehiro Hira

Takehiro Hira is a Japanese actor who works in theater, film, and television, born in Setagaya, Tokyo, to the actors Mikijirō Hira and Yoshiko Sakuma. He grew up in Japan until age 15 and later studied at Brown University. His first stage role came in 2002 in Yukio Mishima's Rokumeikan, and he went on to play Iago in Othello, with his father as Othello. He gained major recognition as Yoshinobu Tokugawa, the last shogun, in the NHK taiga drama Atsuhime. He appeared in several Takashi Miike films, among them Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (2011), and also appeared in Ace Attorney and Aku no Kyoten. In 2005 he was the Player Queen in an English Hamlet that toured the UK for three months, and he later led the British series Giri/Haji. His American credits include Lost Girls & Love Hotels (2020), Snake Eyes (2021), and Gran Turismo (2023), and he starred in FX's Shōgun in 2024.
