Plot summary
Andy Ramirez, an asteroid miner, is asleep in cryogenic suspension aboard the mining vessel Borealis when an asteroid hits it. He wakes to emergency evacuation procedures, and his escape pod comes down on a barren alien planet, where he finds himself the only survivor. His suit has an oxygen breach and his tank is low; the suit's outdated AI assistant, LEONARD, is with him. Andy meets Dwayne, another survivor, who is sending out a distress signal and says a rescue may be up to two years away. Then Naomi Calloway reaches Andy by radio: she is trapped in her own escape pod, a leg pinned, roughly ten kilometers off. LEONARD calculates that the trip will consume much of the oxygen Andy has left.
