Plot summary
Ignazio La Brocca, sixty, lives in a luxurious villa with Angela, once his maid and now his wife. The Superintendent of Fine Arts invites the young architect Lance Brown to the property with Jimmy, his fifteen-year-old son, to excavate a tomb said to hold Princess Aisha, walled up alive by Roger of Altavilla. Angela and Ignazio sleep in separate rooms. Angela finds a rose and an explicit note, and more letters follow from a suitor who threatens to hurt himself; she does not know who writes them. Jimmy, fifteen, is drawn to Angela, and the excavation continues on the villa's grounds.

- The film's producer and director forced Laura Antonelli to undergo cosmetic treatment to hide signs of ageing; her lawyers said an allergic reaction to the injections disfigured her face, and 30 billion lire in damages was sought from the three men.
- After thirteen years, the Tribunale di Roma rejected the damages claim, ruling that Laura Antonelli's skin damage came from an allergic reaction called Quincke's edema, not the injections, and cleared the surgeon, the producer and the director.
- Antonelli's lawyers also sued the Italian Ministry of Grace and Justice over the slowness of the trial; after a first-instance award of 10,000 euros in 2003, the Perugia appeal court granted her 108,000 euros plus interest in 2006 for her nine-year ordeal.
