Plot summary
Will Dempsey, out of a psychiatric hospital, talks with his therapist, Dr. Cait Morris. Flashbacks return to his marriage to Abby: they met as students, and he proposed before a year had passed. Abby is pregnant with their first child and at work on a thesis about the unreliable narrator, which she holds life itself to be. She was raised by an uncle, Joe, who abused her for years and stopped only when she threatened him. Abby eats with Will's parents, Irwin and Linda, and on the walk home afterward she tells her husband that the baby is a girl she intends to name Dylan.
