Plot summary
Harry Hannan works for the U.S. government. After an operation in Mexico goes wrong, his wife Dorothy is killed, and he spends five months in a sanitarium. He comes back to his New York apartment and finds a doctoral student, Ellie Fabian, living in it; she says a sublet was arranged for her last semester at Princeton. She hands him a note that was pushed under the door, written in Hebrew characters he cannot read. Harry begins to think his own agency is targeting him.

- Because shooting on Last Embrace overlapped with the height of the tourist season at Niagara Falls, the production was limited to filming between 3:00am and 8:30am in the tunnels around the Falls.
- Jonathan Demme called the Last Embrace script flawed and said he and his collaborators tried very hard to fix it, an experience that taught him not to make a movie unless he believed in the script.
