Plot summary
Held in a cell and fitted with a prosthetic mask, David Aames describes to court psychologist Dr. Curtis McCabe how he came to be there. David inherited his father's publishing company, the rest of it held by a board he calls the Seven Dwarfs, and he left the daily business to his father's associates while living as a playboy. At his birthday party, his best friend Brian Shelby introduces Sofia Serrano, and the two spend the night talking at her apartment. Julie Gianni, a lover David has treated casually, has followed them, and the next morning she offers him a ride and, jealous of Sofia, speeds through the streets until the car goes off a bridge. The crash leaves David's face mangled.

- To film the deserted Times Square sequence, the crew blocked off a large section of traffic in the early hours of a Sunday morning in November 2000, working within a strict time limit the city imposed even at that hour.
- After filming finished in New York, production moved to Los Angeles, where the remaining interior shots were completed at Paramount Studios. Crowe intentionally left in shots of the World Trade Center after the September 11 attacks as a tribute.
- The film's title is a reference to depictions of skies in certain paintings by Claude Monet. Its tone was also derived from the acoustic ballad "By Way of Sorrow" by Julie Miller and a line from an early Elvis Presley interview: "I feel lonely, even in a crowded room."
