Plot summary
Chris Kilos, who runs the museum, keeps among his treasures a sword attributed to Alexander the Great and said to protect whoever bears it. The sword disappears in a robbery that leaves several guards dead, and detective Nick Milano, on the case, suspects an inside job. His colleague Andrew Garrett, who has visions of a distant past, is kept off the investigation and takes it up on his own with Julie, a museum historian. At the same time, a stranger named Parmenion arrives at the city's underground fights with a champion called The Mongol and proposes a duel between fighters, with the sword as the prize.

- Lorenzo Lamas, who starred in 1992's The Swordsman, only learned Gladiator Cop existed when he read about it in a trade publication, was blindsided by the reuse of his old scenes, and threatened to sue; the production paid him his original fee to drop the suit, though he shot no new footage.
- Gladiator Cop's subsidy from the OFDC was initially approved, then rescinded when examiners noticed how much content was recycled from an earlier work, putting the shooting dates outside the qualifying window; production entity Corktown sued for payment and lost in court in October 1996.

Gladiator Cop repurposes much footage and outtakes from 1992's The Swordsman and brought back supporting actors such as Nicholas Pasco to link old material with new, even though Pasco's character had died in the original film.- Because Lorenzo Lamas was not asked to reprise his role, his character takes on a gladiator persona during fights so he can wear a partial face mask that concealed the double standing in for him, credited as Mark Foreman.
