Plot summary
On 5 April 1943 a Foreign Legion convoy enters El Ksour, Tunisia, tasked with carrying six billion francs in gold bars out of the bank and back to French territory. German troops are waiting in the ruined town, and their ambush kills most of the battalion. Sergeant Augagneur, adjutant Mahuzard, Boissier and Borzik come through it and take refuge in a ruined hotel, where they find Béral, an artilleryman and the only man left from his own unit. Once the shooting stops, the survivors disagree about the gold: Augagneur wants it for himself, while Mahuzard intends to finish the mission he was given. The bank manager and his wife Hélène arrive in the town.
