Plot summary

America has shut its borders, and Simin, an Iranian American woman, arrived among the last immigrants let into the country. She works for the Census Bureau, the government agency that matters most here, as one of its lead dream catchers. The Bureau runs a program that records the dreams of citizens as part of an effort to understand and control the population. Simin does not know what the recordings are for. Her gratitude toward the country that admitted her sits beside her compassion for the people whose dreams she collects, and she is still working out what being a free American means to her.
