Edward Fielding
Biography
Edward Fielding was an American actor whose career spanned Broadway and Hollywood until his death in 1945. He performed in almost 40 Broadway productions from 1905 to 1939, frequently as a leading man opposite actresses including Ethel Barrymore and Laura Hope Crews, as well as Olga Nethersole and Grace George. He was especially associated with plays by Henrik Ibsen and also spent time acting in London. His silent film work included playing Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes (1916) alongside William Gillette. In 1939 he came to Hollywood and appeared in more than 80 films, mostly in small or supporting parts. He appeared in four Alfred Hitchcock movies between 1940 and 1945, and he was perhaps best known as the old butler Frith in Rebecca (1940). Other supporting roles came in Kitty Foyle (1940), The Major and the Minor (1942), and In This Our Life (1942). He often portrayed dignified figures such as doctors, officials, judges, priests, and butlers.
