Plot summary
George Shuttleworth, a chimney sweep in Wigan, is set on winning the Isle of Man TT races, though his neighbors doubt him. The Rainbow Motorcycle Company turns down his request for a factory ride, so he enters a machine of his own, the Shuttleworth Snap, put together from an old Rainbow bike. He asks his mother for five pounds to travel to the island; she takes the money from the savings his grandfather hides in the lining of the settee. George goes by train to Liverpool and boards the steamer for Douglas. On board he pushes Florrie Dibney, secretary to the Rainbow boss, clear of a stray cargo crate and knocks her hat over the side.
