Plot summary
Cal is a poor high school senior headed for graduation and college, and UCLA is courting him for a scholarship, so he studies hard. His dog Runt is his only friend. Vic, the quarterback, dates Gabriella, whom Cal is drawn to, and Vic threatens and beats Cal at every chance. Cecily, another teenager, asks Cal out a few times, and he refuses her. When some football players try to copy his answers on an exam, Cal blocks them; a teacher questions him, and he denies any cheating. Vic and his teammates, worried about losing their place on the team, corner Cal and press him to take the blame.
