Plot summary
Al McCord meets Ellie at his favorite restaurant, and she asks him to drive her from the city to the Mojave Desert, where her mother lives. In the desert Al finds romance with Julie, a free spirit, though her boyfriend Boyd is close by and looks ready to go berserk at any moment. Ellie, for her part, is falling for Al. A flat tire stops the car, and the repair trip to a gas station is interrupted by an attempted robbery, after a brush with a highway patrolman. The station's gun-happy worker causes enough confusion for Al to get away unhurt.
