Plot summary
John Shay is thirteen and comes from a wealthy family. His parents are Anna and Brad, and Laurie is his older sister. They live in a large house in the suburbs. Outwardly his life looks ideal, but John feels cut off from all of it. Walking in the woods near the house, he comes across a bunker that was never finished. He decides he wants control of the household, so he drugs his mother, father and sister until each of them is unconscious, then hauls them into the bunker one at a time and shuts them in. He has the house to himself. Underground, Anna, Brad and Laurie come to, bewildered and unable to work out what has happened to them.
