Plot summary
Abraham Lincoln begins in New Salem, where he works in a shop and splits rails for a living. He falls in love with Ann Rutledge, but after she dies, he sinks into a depression and even contemplates taking his own life. Later he trains as a lawyer and moves to Springfield, where he meets Mary Todd. His courtship of Mary is complicated by lingering feelings for Ann, but they eventually marry. Lincoln's public career gains momentum through a series of debates with Stephen A. Douglas over slavery and the threat of secession. In 1860 he wins the presidency, just as the nation faces the outbreak of civil war. As president, he must guide the Union through the conflict.
