Maria Schneider
Biography
Maria Schneider was a French actress who began on the Paris stage at fifteen and moved from extra work into larger film parts. Born in Paris, she had her first break in 1970 with Madly, which starred Alain Delon. At nineteen she gained international attention for her performance alongside Marlon Brando in Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris (1972). She later appeared with Jack Nicholson in Michelangelo Antonioni's well-received The Passenger (1975). Her supporting role in Memoirs of a French Whore earned her a César nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in Bunker Palace Hôtel (1989). She took a brief role as Bertha Mason in Jane Eyre (1996). From 1984 she worked more regularly in European television movies and series. In 2010 she received the Chevalier medal of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. She died in 2011.
