Patti Austin
Biography
Patti Austin is an American singer and songwriter in R&B, pop, and jazz who performed at the Apollo Theater when she was four. She was born in Harlem and raised in Bay Shore, New York, and as a teenager she sang jingles and took session work in soul and R&B. Family Tree gave her an R&B hit in 1969, and she later provided backing vocals for Paul Simon and Billy Joel, while her debut album, End of a Rainbow, came out on CTI in 1976. She sang on Quincy Jones's album The Dude and then joined his Qwest label, where Baby, Come to Me, a duet with James Ingram, topped the Billboard pop chart. Recordings with the WDR Big Band included For Ella, a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, and Avant Gershwin, which won her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. She has received one Grammy from seven nominations and appeared in 20 Feet from Stardom (2013).
