Plot summary
Charlie Price works at Price & Sons, the Northampton shoe factory his family has run for four generations. He intends to leave it behind and settle in London, where Nicola Marsden, his fiancée, also wants to live. Then Harold Price dies, and Charlie learns that the company's main contract lapsed long ago, so there is no work for the staff he now has to lay off. Nicola pushes him to sell the building to a developer who wants upscale condos. Lauren, a worker facing a layoff, argues for a niche product instead. On a trip to London, Charlie meets Lola, a drag performer whose heel snaps, and proposes boots made for the build of drag queens. Lola joins as a consultant, and the male workforce is unhappy about both her and the change.

- An episode of the BBC2 documentary series Trouble at the Top, broadcast in February 1999, inspired the film: it featured Steve Pateman, struggling with the possible closure of W.J. Brooks Ltd, a family-controlled shoe factory in Earls Barton, Northamptonshire, that came to cater to men wearing traditionally women's shoes, such as black patent boots, under the "Divine" brand.
- The story became a Broadway musical with songs by Cyndi Lauper and a book co-written by Harvey Fierstein; at the 67th Tony Awards in 2013 it won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Actor for Billy Porter, and Best Original Score for Lauper, the first sole female winner of that award.
