Jessie Royce Landis
Biography
Jessie Royce Landis was an American actress who worked mainly on the stage before becoming a character actress in films. Born in Chicago, she trained at the Hinshaw Dramatic School after a scholarship at 14 and began acting with the Evanston Stock Company two years later. She became a leading lady and director with the North Shore Players, then toured with The Highwayman in 1924. Her Broadway work started with The Honor of the Family in 1926 and finished with Roar Like a Dove in 1964. In the early 1950s she spent three seasons on the London stage and earned praise as the year's best stage performance for Larger Than Life in 1950. She later appeared in To Catch a Thief (1955), The Swan (1956), and North by Northwest (1959), often playing mothers. She also acted on radio and television and published an autobiography, You Won't Be So Pretty (but You'll Know More), in 1954.
