Plot summary
Five days after the Erudite assault on Abnegation, Jeanine Matthews declares martial law and brands the Divergents and their allies enemies of the city. A box bearing the five faction symbols is found in the wreckage, and Jeanine believes it holds a message from the city's founders that only a Divergent can unlock. Beatrice Prior, called Tris, hides with Four, her brother Caleb and Peter at the Amity compound, where Johanna Reyes shelters them. Tris talks openly of killing Jeanine; when Erudite forces sweep the compound for Divergents, the group flees to the train tracks. Factionless fighters take them in, and their leader, Evelyn, wants an alliance against Erudite. Four refuses her.
