Plot summary
Two years after her family's move to San Francisco, thirteen-year-old Riley Andersen is about to begin high school. Inside her mind, Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger oversee her Sense of Self, the store of memories and feelings that shape what she believes, and Joy has built a mechanism that flings bad memories to the back of her mind. Riley joins her friends Bree and Grace at a three-day ice hockey camp, hoping to make her new school's team, the Fire Hawks. The night before camp the puberty alarm sounds, mind workers overhaul the emotion console, and four newcomers appear: Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui. Joy wants Riley to have fun; Anxiety wants her to earn a place and make new friends, since Bree and Grace will go to a different high school.

- Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling declined to return as Fear and Disgust after a pay dispute; they and the rest of the returning cast were reportedly offered $100,000 each, about two percent of the $5 million Amy Poehler was offered to come back as Joy.
- The 2023 writers' and actors' strikes hit late in the animation process, and with Pixar set on keeping the release date, the film went through "the largest crunch in the studio's history", with Pete Docter stepping in as an uncredited co-director.
- Director Kelsey Mann auditioned Maya Hawke for the new emotion Anxiety over Zoom from a back room at Epcot while on a family vacation with his kids, after Mark Nielsen told him she was free just then; her performance drove him to tears.
- Inside Out 2 was first written around a talent show, but after about three test screenings Kelsey Mann, Mark Nielsen and Meg LeFauve moved the story to Riley playing hockey, a change influenced by advice Mann sought from Turning Red director Domee Shi.
- Composer Andrea Datzman, who took over from Michael Giacchino, became the first woman to score a Pixar feature film with Inside Out 2.
- After Lightyear and Elemental underperformed financially, Pixar employees worried about the studio, and Inside Out 2's box-office fate was described as a "life or death situation".
- A character representing shame was developed for the film but cut after consultant Dacher Keltner judged shame was not a distinct primary emotion; the team also worried the character was too heavy for an animated feature.
