Kathryn Hunter
Biography
Kathryn Hunter is an actress and theater director who was born in New York, grew up in England, and made physical theater her specialty. Her training came at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and she studied clowning with Philippe Gaulier before working with companies such as Shared Experience and Complicité. Her performance as the millionairess in Friedrich Dürrenmatt's The Visit earned her an Olivier Award in 1991, and no British actress before her had taken on King Lear in a professional production. The Royal Shakespeare Company named her an Artistic Associate in 2008, and in 2009 she directed Othello for the company. On screen she played Charmian in Rome, voiced Gorn in Tron: Uprising, and appeared as Eedy Karn in Andor. Her films include Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) and The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021), whose Three Witches brought her the New York Film Critics Circle award for supporting actress.

Early training
Hunter's training took place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she directed student productions and became an associate. She also learned clowning in France with Philippe Gaulier at École Philippe Gaulier.
Behind the camera
Hunter first worked as a director for the RSC in 2009, with a production of Othello that played the Warwick Arts Centre, Hackney Empire, Northern Stage, Oxford Playhouse and Liverpool Playhouse.
Beyond film
Hunter appeared in Kafka's Monkey, a solo piece drawn from Franz Kafka's "A Report to an Academy." She portrayed a monkey giving a speech to a scientific society about becoming a man.

In November 2013, Hunter played the fairy Puck in Julie Taymor's A Midsummer Night's Dream. That production was the one that launched the Theatre for a New Audience in Brooklyn.
