Plot summary
Amnesia has erased the past few days for Harvard professor Robert Langdon, who regains consciousness in a hospital in Florence, Italy, with visions he cannot explain. Dr. Sienna Brooks, the physician looking after him, says a bullet wound to his head caused the amnesia. The officer who arrives to question him opens fire, and Brooks gets Langdon out of the building and to her apartment. Among his belongings they find a small image projector holding an altered version of Botticelli's Map of Hell. It is the opening piece of a puzzle assembled by Bertrand Zobrist, a transhumanist scientist who argues that the planet's rising population requires harsh action and who took his own life three days earlier.
