Plot summary

Éliane Devries was born in colonial Indochina to French parents and manages the rubber plantation she shares with her widowed father. Camille is her adopted daughter, a teenager whose birth parents, friends of Éliane, belonged to the Nguyễn dynasty. Éliane meets Jean-Baptiste Le Guen, a young navy lieutenant, when both bid on a painting at an auction. Days later he comes to the plantation looking for a boy whose sampan he set on fire on suspicion of smuggling. He and Éliane begin a relationship.
