Plot summary

Germany's army is closing on Paris in June 1940, and Odile, a widowed schoolteacher, joins the flight south with thirteen-year-old Philippe and seven-year-old Cathy. German aircraft bomb the crowded road, destroying their car, and the three scatter into the woods. A shaven-headed seventeen-year-old named Yvan, who can hunt and knows the woods, leads them off the road and breaks into a large country house whose musician owners have gone abroad. He cuts the telephone line and hides a radio, keeping the war outside. Odile watches him with suspicion, while Philippe admires his nerve and bribes him to stay, handing over the watch that belonged to the children's father. Yvan hunts rabbits and fishes in a nearby river while Odile keeps the house.
