Plot summary
Shlomo comes running out of a forest into the village with news of what he has seen the Nazis do in a nearby town. He tells the rabbi, and together they go through the village gathering enough people for a meeting. Many of the men will not believe him, since Shlomo is the town lunatic, and they criticize him, but the rabbi believes him. The talk turns to what is coming and what can be done. Shlomo proposes that the community build a train and deport itself. Some of the villagers will dress as Nazi officers and the rest will ride as deportees, and the train will head for Palestine by way of Russia, the disguise meant to fool the real Nazis.

- In 1996 Roberto Benigni was sent the script of Train of Life and offered the role of the village idiot Shlomo by writer-director Mihăileanu, but he turned it down and afterwards went off to write and direct Life Is Beautiful.
