Plot summary
Karol Karol is a Polish hairdresser living in Paris with his wife Dominique. After six months she seeks a divorce, and at the court an interpreter makes clear to Karol that Dominique does not love him and that he was unable to consummate their marriage. The divorce is granted, and Dominique gives him a suitcase of his possessions before driving away. Karol loses the salon they owned together, his passport, and his money. He becomes a beggar, playing songs on a comb in a Métro station. There he meets Mikołaj, a successful married Pole who offers him an unusual job: to kill a man who wants to die but lacks the courage. Karol refuses. Mikołaj then helps him return to Poland hidden inside a suitcase.
