Plot summary
Mathilde has used a wheelchair since childhood polio, and she was engaged to Manech, who carved the letters MMM into a church bell near their home, for Manech aime Mathilde. During World War I, Manech is one of five French soldiers convicted of wounding themselves to escape the trenches; their punishment is banishment into no man's land in the Somme, between the French and German lines. It appears the five were killed in the following battle. Mathilde will not accept that, and with the help of the private investigator Germain Pire she sets out to learn the stories of the other four condemned men and of the court-martial that sent them out there.
