Biography

Born in Heilbronn, Germany, Andrzej Seweryn is a Polish actor and director who trained at Warsaw's National Academy of Dramatic Art, finishing in 1968. He gained fame in the 1970s through Andrzej Wajda films such as Without Anesthesia, The Promised Land and Man of Iron, and won a Silver Bear for his role in Wajda's 1980 Dyrygent at the Berlin film festival. In France he worked with directors including Patrice Chéreau and Peter Brook, and he joined the Comédie-Française in Paris in 1993, becoming a full member in 1995. He is known in the United States for playing Julian Scherner in Schindler's List (1993) and has portrayed Robespierre in La Révolution française (1989). He won Best Actor at Locarno in 2016 for The Last Family (2016), the Polish Academy Award for Best Actor in 2017 for that role, and the Polish Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2023 for Śubuk (2022).
