Plot summary
Zorg is a handyman at Gruissan, a seaside resort on France's Mediterranean coast, looking after wooden beach houses and writing in his spare time. He meets Betty, an impulsive 19-year-old with a volatile temper, and the two start a passionate affair in a shack he has borrowed. During a row she tears the place apart. Afterward she comes upon his first novel in manuscript form, reads it in a single sitting, and is convinced he is a genius. A further quarrel with his boss follows, and she clears out the shack before setting it alight. The couple leave for the Paris suburbs and move into a hotel run by Lisa, Betty's friend. Betty types up Zorg's novel and sends it to publishers. They meet Lisa's boyfriend Eddy and find work at his pizzeria.
