Plot summary
After three months in prison, Victor Vauthier is back at work, running thefts and frauds under whatever name and disguise suit the moment. He reports as required to Marie-Charlotte Pontalec, his parole officer, and the two get along at once. Victor also keeps company with Camille, an older man who guides him. Camille encourages him to profit from his closeness to Marie-Charlotte, because her father is a custodian at the Senlis Museum, where a triptych by El Greco hangs. Money is Victor's aim, enough to pay for a sea wall guarding Mont-Saint-Michel. He and two friends settle on taking the painting and ransoming it back to the cultural ministry.
