Biography

Julien Guiomar was an actor whose five decades of work took in the stage, television and film. Born in 1928, he once pictured himself following his father into dentistry, but acting won out, and from 1952 he appeared in more than thirty plays with Jean Vilar's Théâtre National Populaire. Television brought over forty films, among them Molière's Le malade imaginaire (1971), in which he played Diafoirus. On screen he specialized in figures of authority with a streak of eccentricity: the colonel in Costa-Gavras's Z (1969), a lunatic who believes himself a bishop in Philippe de Broca's King of Hearts (1966), and a sham priest in Louis Malle's The Thief of Paris (1967). He also played God in Arthur Joffé's Let There Be Light (1998). He retired in 2004, after one last television film, and died in 2010.
