Biography

Peggy Ann Garner was an American actress who started as a child performer after her mother pushed her into talent quests, and she was born in Canton, Ohio, in 1932. She modeled for photographers before her first film appearance at six in Little Miss Thoroughbred, then took small parts in In Name Only (1939) and other features. Critics praised her as the young Jane Eyre in Jane Eyre (1943), and she appeared in The Keys of the Kingdom (1944). Her role as Francie Nolan in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945) won wide acclaim and the Academy Juvenile Award at the 18th Academy Awards. She went on to films including Home, Sweet Homicide (1946), Daisy Kenyon (1947), and The Big Cat (1949), but Black Widow (1954) did not establish her in adult screen roles. She also worked in theater, toured in Bus Stop, and appeared on television, returning to film in A Wedding (1978).

Garner won the Academy Juvenile Award at the 18th Academy Awards in 1946, honoring her film work of 1945, especially A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Junior Miss.
A role that slipped away
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer wanted Garner for National Velvet, but Twentieth Century Fox would not let her contract be half-sold, so the role went to her Jane Eyre co-star Elizabeth Taylor.
First role
At six years old, Garner appeared in a film for the first time, the Warner Bros. release Little Miss Thoroughbred, where she played a small part as an orphan.
A change of course
Before she started appearing in films in 1938, Garner spent two years posing as a child model for still photographers.
