Maurice Moscovitch
Biography
Maurice Moscovitch was a Russian American actor who made his name in Yiddish theater. Born in Odessa, he left Tsarist Russia and had reached the United States by 1897, then spent decades on the New York Yiddish stage and appeared in two Broadway plays in 1930. During the last four years of his life he worked in film, taking supporting parts in 14 movies. His accent helped him play wise, friendly old men. Make Way for Tomorrow (1937), which drew high praise, cast him as a shopkeeper. In Love Affair (1939) he was the art dealer Maurice Cobert. For his final film, Charlie Chaplin's Hitler satire The Great Dictator (1940), he played Mr. Jaeckel, the Barber's friendly neighbor, who flees into exile to his brother. He died in 1940 at 68, and the dancing master he had been playing in Dance, Girl, Dance was rewritten for Maria Ouspenskaya.
