Janis Carter
Biography
Janis Carter was an American actress of stage and film who worked from the 1940s into the 1950s. Born Janis Elinore Dremann in Cleveland, Ohio, she took her grandmother's maiden name as a stage name. Trained first as a pianist, she switched to singing at eight and went to New York hoping for an opera career before finding work on Broadway in Virginia (1937), Du Barry Was a Lady (1939), and Panama Hattie (1940). Darryl F. Zanuck spotted her onstage and signed her to films. She appeared in more than 30 movies from 1941 for studios such as 20th Century Fox, Columbia, MGM, and RKO, among them Night Editor (1946) and Framed (1947) with Glenn Ford and Flying Leathernecks (1951) with John Wayne. She returned to New York for television and co-hosted the quiz show Feather Your Nest with Bud Collyer. She made her last appearance in an episode of The Elgin Hour in January 1955.
