Plot summary
The hosts, a Mr. and Mrs. Owen, invite eight guests to a mansion on an island off the coast of Devon, where the married servants Thomas and Ethel Rogers are already in place. At dinner the butler plays a gramophone record in which a man's voice declares that everyone present is responsible for an innocent person's death, naming a general, a doctor, a judge, a detective, a prince, a schoolmistress, a spinster and the couple. None of the ten has ever met the Owens, and they work out that the name means unknown. The dining table's centerpiece is a set of ten Indian figurines, matching a nursery rhyme, and with no boat before Monday and no way to send word, the guests wonder whether the host is hidden on the island or is one of them.

- René Clair said the only interesting part of making the film was adapting it with Dudley Nichols; the novel's "little bluffs, little deceits" could not be presented on screen, and they changed Agatha Christie's tone, conceiving the picture "more or less as a comedy."
- The film was released by 20th Century Fox, but its copyright was allowed to lapse, putting it in the public domain; it has since been remastered multiple times and is freely available online.
