Plot summary
In 2002 Bart Millard's band MercyMe wins Song of the Year at the GMA Dove Awards, after their song becomes Christian radio's most played. Bart and his wife Shannon are raising five children; their oldest son Sam is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after a seizure. Ten years later, Bart tracks Sam's blood sugar, and Sam, teaching himself guitar, resents the reminders. MercyMe's manager Scott Brickell says the band will headline a tour, and he picks Tim Timmons to open. Tim marks an X on his wrist in gratitude to God, and Scott invites Sam to come along.

- The Roys Report said the film's claim to be "based on a true story" is wrong about its central thread: Tim Timmons never wrote the song at a piano in response to his cancer journey. Christian musician Crystal Lewis wrote it while facing personal tragedy and bankruptcy, well before she met Timmons.
