Plot summary

Lydia Tár holds the chief conductor's post at a Berlin orchestra and relies on Francesca, her personal assistant. She is preparing a live recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony and a memoir, Tár on Tár. In Berlin she lives with her wife Sharon, the orchestra's concertmaster, and their daughter Petra. She meets Eliot Kaplan, a banker and amateur conductor who co-founded a foundation with her to support aspiring female conductors, and they talk about filling a vacant cello seat. In the bathroom before the orchestra's blind audition for that seat, she spots Olga Metkina, a young Russian cellist.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about TÁR (2022)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Composer Hildur Guðnadóttir's score for Tár was ruled ineligible for Oscar consideration because it leaned too heavily on pre-existing classical music by Mahler and Elgar, running afoul of a rule barring scores "diluted by the use of pre-existing music."
  • Austrian musicologist Bernd Brabec accused the filmmakers of lifting parts of his own academic CV for the fictional biography of Lydia Tár read aloud on screen, and wrote an open letter to director Todd Field objecting to the film's treatment of the Shipibo-Konibo people.
  • Every piece of in-scene music in Tár was performed and captured live during filming rather than dubbed in afterward, including Cate Blanchett's own piano playing, Sophie Kauer's cello, and the Dresden Philharmonic's on-camera performances.
  • Writer-director Todd Field wrote the lead role specifically for Cate Blanchett and said he would have abandoned the project entirely if she had turned it down.
  • Tár became only the fourth film ever named Film of the Year by all four major American and British critics' groups at once: the New York, Los Angeles and London film critics circles and the National Society of Film Critics.
  • The New York Times reported Tár cost at least $35 million including marketing, grouping it with other acclaimed 2022 films from major directors, like Licorice Pizza and Nightmare Alley, that failed to earn back their costs at the box office.
