- After clips of the film and its song "Watermelon," performed by Emily Skeggs, went viral on TikTok in September 2024, the 2020 film gained a cult following, and an online grassroots campaign led to new screenings; the Frida Cinema in Santa Ana sold out in under 24 hours.
- The film grew out of two separate Rehmeier sketches, Kicks (2006), about Simon paying for punk records by volunteering for clinical trials, and Dinner in America (2009), about Patty's family dinner, which he merged between 2013 and 2014.
- Emily Skeggs and Rehmeier wrote the song "Watermelon" in one day, during the two weeks of rehearsals held before shooting began.
