Plot summary
Miles Cullen works the teller's window at a bank branch inside a Toronto shopping mall, and he is lonely and methodical. He is drawn to his coworker Julie Carver, who is having an affair with Charles Packard, the branch's married manager. Days before Christmas, Miles finds a discarded holdup note on one of the counters, and the handwriting matches that of Harry Reikle, the Santa Claus who works the mall outside the bank. Miles says nothing to his bosses or the police. Instead he begins slipping the cash from his own transactions into an old lunch box rather than the till, and when the hold-up comes he hands Reikle a small amount and reports that it was all he had taken that day.

Elliott Gould said that after the film was completed executives wanted Daryl Duke to add a beheading scene; Duke refused, was removed from the film, and the scene was shot by Curtis Hanson. Gould said he was not happy about it and that Duke "really did a wonderful job".- The Silent Partner was the first film produced by Carolco Pictures and one of the earliest films from within Canada to take advantage of the government's "Capital Cost Allowance" incentive plan, which gave production companies tax inducements to make commercial films in Canada.
- The Silent Partner was nominated for 11 Canadian Film Awards and, although it was the only film in competition that had not been seen by the public, won six of them, including best picture and best director for Daryl Duke.
- The Silent Partner was the first film from Mario Kassar, who invested half a million dollars in it; he later tried to remake it but says Curtis Hanson could not do it.
- Curtis Hanson said the picture he had written, The Silent Partner, influenced Bad Influence (1990), whose writer David Koepp was a big fan of it; when its financiers looked for a director, one of them, a fan of Hanson's The Bedroom Window, suggested him.
