Paul Winfield
Biography
Paul Winfield was an American actor who built a career in film, television, theater, and voice work. Born in Los Angeles, he first appeared on screen in a 1965 episode of Perry Mason, and his first major film role came in The Lost Man. He was known for playing a Louisiana sharecropper in Sounder (1972), which brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He portrayed Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1978 miniseries King and earned an Emmy nomination for it. His later films included Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), The Terminator (1984), and Mars Attacks! (1996). On television he appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation, L.A. Law, The Charmings, and 227, and in 1995 he won an Emmy for a guest role on Picket Fences. He also narrated City Confidential and acted on Broadway in Checkmates.

Winfield made his first screen appearance as Mitch, a race car mechanic, in the 1965 Perry Mason episode "The Case of the Runaway Racer."
Getting ready for a role
Winfield remembered that when he was a young actor he took one of the leads in Of Mice and Men, performed in whiteface by a local repertory company. Back then, a black actor in that role would have been unthinkable.
Beyond film
In 1988, Winfield appeared in Checkmates, which was his only Broadway production. Ruby Dee co-starred in it, and it also marked Denzel Washington's Broadway debut.
