Plot summary
Case 880 concerns fake one-dollar bills, each carrying the same mistake: Washington spelled Wahsington. The notes are plainly amateur, yet they pass unnoticed because few people examine their change closely. Agent Steve Buchanan has studied how the bills are spent and works the Brooklyn and Bronx neighborhoods where they turn up. Ann Winslow, meanwhile, spends one of the notes at a business Steve is watching, and he asks her out to learn whether she is involved. Told by a business owner who he works for, Ann reads a book about counterfeiting and fills their dinner with false clues and outdated slang. Steve decides she is no criminal and keeps seeing her.
