Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- S. Craig Zahler did not want computer-generated imagery in the film, so most of the violence and gore was done as physical special effects, and he minimised edits, close-ups and sound effects. The actors performed the fight scenes over multiple takes without stunt doubles, risking injury if there was a mistake.
- Principal photography ran for five weeks, from August 15 to October 17, 2016, on Staten Island, New York City. The schedule was tight, the crew shot multiple locations in the same day, lost locations during the shoot and looked for new ones during their lunch breaks.
- Woody Harrelson was weighed for the lead that went to Vince Vaughn: "If Woody Harrelson came in and did this, he would have done an excellent job, the transformation isn't as big. That was the thing with picking Vince, that transformation would be there."
