Biography

Linda Hopkins was an American actress and a singer of blues and gospel who grew up in New Orleans and was discovered at eleven by Mahalia Jackson. Jackson arranged for her to join the Southern Harp Spiritual Singers in 1936, and Hopkins stayed with the group for a decade. She later moved to the Oakland area, where Johnny Otis and Little Esther Phillips created her stage name, Linda Hopkins. She recorded for several labels, toured Europe in 1960, and had her only hit single, Shake a Hand, with Jackie Wilson, which reached number 21 on the Billboard R&B chart. After attending Stella Adler's Acting School, she appeared on Broadway in Purlie and won a Tony and a Drama Desk Award for Inner City in 1972. Her one-woman show Me and Bessie earned a Drama Desk nomination, and Black and Blue brought a Tony nomination. She received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2005 and died in 2017.
