Plot summary
In September 1975, a 40-storey tower outside London, built by the architect Anthony Royal, offers its residents a supermarket, a pool, a gym, a spa and a primary school. Wealthy residents occupy the top floors and poorer ones live below, and few have reason to leave except for work. After his sister dies, Dr. Robert Laing takes a flat on the 25th floor. Power cuts, shut-off water and blocked garbage chutes become common, irritating the residents.
