Plot summary
Garfield shares a house with Jon Arbuckle and with Odie, a dog who is not quick on the uptake. One morning Garfield pesters Jon about breakfast and tangles with Odie, so Jon sends the two of them outside to play. Out there they bother a neighbor's dog, and the neighbor, Hubert, calls the pound in anger. The dogcatcher comes for them, and while Garfield gets away, Odie is captured and taken to the pound. Garfield cannot tell Jon what has happened, and the house is dull without his companion, so he decides to go to the pound and bring Odie back.

- Jim Davis was working out how to animate Garfield dancing for the opening sequence, since the comic-strip cat always walked on all four feet. Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz was in the same studio that day and redrew the cat, telling Davis the problem was that Garfield's feet were too small.
- Lou Rawls, who had just finished a USO tour of army bases, joined the Garfield franchise with this special and completed the soundtrack recordings in mid-1982. He said he figured that if Bill Cosby could do Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and live forever on the earnings, he could do Garfield.
- Besides contributing to the music of the special, Desirée Goyette served as the performance model for Garfield's dance during the title song, so the animated cat's movements were based on hers.
